Superintendent Update - August 17, 2021

August 17, 2021

NELSD Families,

With the school year starting this Thursday, Aug. 19th we are looking forward to having our students back in the buildings where we can serve their academic needs best. Families are encouraged to stop in and visit your student's school building during their open houses tomorrow, Aug. 18th, at the following times:

  • 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. for Elementary Schools (Northridge, Rolling Hills, and South Vienna)

  • 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. for Middle Schools (Northridge and Northeastern)

  • 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. for High Schools (Kenton Ridge and Northeastern)

Our priority at Northeastern Local School District (NELSD) will continue to be the safety of all of our students, families and staff, and we will continue to monitor the guidelines from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Ohio Department of Health (ODH), and will work with the Clark County Combined Health District (CCCHD) to determine COVID-related safety protocols throughout the school year.

As I stated in my previous communications, anyone who is masked consistently and adhering to three-foot social distancing will not be required to quarantine if considered a close contact.

It is important to note that the District will still need to contact trace any situation of a positive or probable positive COVID-19 case. In those instances, we will provide the list of close contacts to the Clark County Combined Health District (CCCHD), and they will provide letters to those individuals who would need to be isolated.

The following links are to documents that provide facts and an outline for procedures we will be following: Guidelines for K-12 Student Quarantine and Guidelines for Quarantine After Exposure in K-12 Classroom Settings. The Guidelines for Quarantine After Exposure in K-12 Classroom Settings document provides a flowchart that outlines the scenarios for when we will need to quarantine students/staff. While it is strongly recommended that students and staff wear masks to protect themselves, this will be a family choice for our NELSD students. If your child has been vaccinated and you would like the District to have a copy of their vaccination card on file for quarantine purposes, you may do so at your child’s school building office.

Masking is required by a federal mandate for bus riders at this time. This mandate is set to expire during September and we will have to see if it is renewed. All bus riders will be asked to wear masks to comply with the mandate. Additionally, we know many of you are looking for information on bus routes. We have that information available on the District website which you can also access by clicking here

We will not be providing the same online option that we did last school year. The State of Ohio has changed how we would need to offer that as an option and it is just not a viable option for the Northeastern Local School District (NELSD) at this time.

As I previously stated, the District intends to be fully in school as much as possible. However, there may be circumstances such as an outbreak of cases and quarantines in a building or buildings and our lack of staff to support school operations where we may need to go fully virtual during the school year. If you are able to sub in any area or know someone who may be interested in subbing, please reach out to the Board of Education Office at (937) 325-7615 for directions on applying.

Please continue to stay tuned as it is likely more guidance will follow and or could potentially change. We will do our best to keep all of you informed.

Respectfully,

John P. Kronour, Ph.D.
