Dear NELSD Families,
A number of school districts in Ohio have been affected by false reports of an active shooter on their campuses.
There have been numerous reports that schools or law enforcement agencies are receiving internet-based phone calls with threats, which turned out to be unsubstantiated. These incidents are part of a hoax known as “swatting” that is targeting schools across the nation.
While Northeastern Local School District (NELSD) has not experienced this issue directly, we also know that many of our families may be understandably concerned about school safety. Please know the safety and well-being of our students and staff is our top priority. We take all reports of potential threats seriously and make every effort to ensure students and staff feel safe.
Swatting incidents—threats made to schools with the purpose of triggering a response by police and first responders—instill fear and panic throughout school communities, and disrupt first responder agencies. These incidents can be traumatic for everyone involved and cause anxiety for our families, students, staff and community.
We encourage our students and school community to report anything that could constitute a threat to school safety by calling (937) 568-7117 and selecting option 7 or by clicking here to access our Harassment, Intimidation, Bullying and Title IX Online Referral form
. In addition, we have a dedicated School Resource Officer (SRO), Deputy Tyler Reaver, and we work closely with Clark County Sheriff’s Office leaders and officers to assist in these situations.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. Thank you for your attention to this important update.
John Kronour, Ph.D.
