Wilbur Receives The Governor’s Thomas Edison Award for Excellence in STEM Education and Student Research for the 2020-2021 School Year

Northeastern Local School District (NELSD) Teacher Mrs. Christy Wilbur has received The Governor’s Thomas Edison Award for Excellence in STEM Education and Student Reach for her accomplishments in the 2020-2021 school year. 


During the 2020-2021 school year, 85 of our Northeastern High School (NEHS) students completed a STEM project and presented their findings despite school closures and limited resources during the COVID-19 pandemic. Of those 85 students, six advanced to the Ohio Academy of Science’s (OAS) District Science Day with a Superior Rating and presented their work virtually. Additionally, one student advanced to OASs State Science Day and received an Excellent Rating on their work presented. 


“Christy Wilbur is passionate about collaborating with other departments to encourage unified project-based learning for our students across our science, technology, engineering, and mathematics curricula,” said Superintendent John Kronour. “She worked diligently to renew NELSD as the host of the Clark County State Fair, a qualifier for the District Science Fair providing a wonderful opportunity to our students and those in the surrounding areas as well.”


“NEHS is extremely proud of our students and the work Mrs. Wilbur does to keep them inspired,” said NEHS Principal Todd Justice. “She has led our implementation and design of more advanced science courses and effectively promotes widely varied uses of technology inside and outside of the classroom. I really appreciate how she goes above and beyond to provide this opportunity for our students.”


The Governor’s Thomas Edison Awards were established in 1985 and recognize Ohio schools and teachers who inspire scientific student research and technological design and extend experiential opportunities beyond traditional classroom activities. NEHS was one of 45 schools selected in Ohio and one of only two schools chosen in Springfield.
