NELSD Changes to 10-point Grading Scale

Dear Parents,

We are writing this letter to inform you of some changes in the grading scale and grade cards for the 2018-2019 school year. The district adopted a 10-point grading scale for the 2018-2019 school year.

A =      90-100

B =        80-89

C =        70-79

D =         60-69

F =           59-0

Due to the reporting of CCP (College Credit Plus) grades from colleges our grade cards will now have Alpha grades (A,B,C,D,F) only on the grade card. Grades from progressbook will be converted to Alpha grades for the grade card using the above numeric grading scale.

Semester averages will be calculated using the following Alpha Scale:

A =           3.5-4

B =        2.5-3.4

C =        1.5-2.4

D =         .5 -1.4

F =                  0

To figure the semester averages you need to use the following formula:

1st Quarter grade = 40%, 2nd Quarter grade = 40%, Exam = 20%

Example: 1st Quarter = A, 2nd Quarter = B, exam = C    /       (A = 4pts, B = 3pts, C = 2pts)

Add each quarter twice and the exam once 4+4+3+3+2= 16, 16/5=3.2 which is a B looking at the above scale for the semester grade.

To figure the final grade you need to use the following formula:

1st Quarter = 20%, 2 Quarter = 20%, exam = 10%, 3rd Quarter = 20%, 4th Quarter = 20%, exam = 10%

Example: 1st Quarter = A, 2nd Quarter= B, Exam = C, 3rd Quarter= B, 4th Quarter = B, exam = D /     (A= 4pts, B= 3pts, C= 2pts, D= 1pt)

Add each quarter twice and the exam once. 4+4+3+3+2+3+3+3+3+1=29/10=2.9 which is a B.
